Review: The Lanieri Atelier Experience

What’s it like to visit Lanieri’s atelier for a new custom suit? Modern Fellows reviewed the experience. Here’s what we found:

Based in Italy, Lanieri is an incredibly interesting option for online made-to-measure suiting for men.  Backed by major Italian mills and fabric names including Reda, the company only sells high-quality fabrics from the likes of Loro Piana, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Tallia di Delfino and Reda, and makes their suits in Italy.

The Italian startup offers several ways to get measured up for you first custom suit. Last time around, I measured myself and reviewed the suit and the intake process. I did ok measuring myself: The suit jacket fit well but the pants needed some tweaking.  But I wanted a professional to measure me.

Luckily, Lanieri has opened a network of ateliers across Europe in Milan, Rome, Turn, Bologna, Paris, Brussels, Zurich and Biella. Their atelier in Paris was close to where I stayed during a recent trip, so I made the short trek from my hotel in the Marais to Saint Germain.

Inside Lanieri’s Atelier

The shop is staffed by two colleagues who rotate in and out of the shop depending on the day.  Marco welcomed me in during my visit and was knowledgeable about Lanier’s fit system, which uses an algorithm to combine your measurements, weight, height and fit preferences to get you a perfectly-fitting piece of clothing, as well as the fabrics and pieces of clothing on offer.

Getting measured was pretty straightforward. The entire experience took about 15 minutes, accounting for some chit-chat, and afterwards my new measurements and fit preferences were in the system.

While it’s absolutely possible to order a custom suit strictly online, there is something nice about talking through preferences and concerns in person with someone from the company, and to have the chance to see and touch all of the different fabrics available for suits, sport coats, pants and more.

One note: While the team at Lanieri accepts walk-ins if they are not busy, Marco advises that the atelier can be extremely busy on the weekend. It is always a good bet to make an appointment so you are guaranteed to have the undivided attention of the team.

New Offerings: Custom Chinos and Polos

Lanieri recently rolled out new fabrics to make custom chinos.  They are offering a stretch chino made of 97 percent cotton and 3 percent elastine. It was nice to be able to touch the fabrics on-hand at the store.  As spring approaches, Lanieri will also add polo shirts to their offerings.

Now I’m looking forward to ordering my next Lanieri suit.
