Discover the most impressive shirt jackets for men and women (also known as overshirts, basecamp and blanket shirts) and learn more about the rise of the Shacket.
What is a Shacket (aka Shirt Jacket)?
A shacket is a fusion of a jacket and a shirt. Also known as an overshirt or basecamp or blanket shirt, a shacket or shirt jacket tends to be made from heavier material than conventional shirts and to have a slightly oversized appearance. Shackets and shirt jackets may also be lined for an even more coat-like feel.
While shirt jackets aren’t new, shackets have become incredibly popular over recent years. Shackets have frequently appeared in the headlines and are being produced by a wide range of high-profile clothing brands for both men and women.
The Best Shirt Jackets (Shackets) for Men and Women
As the popularity of shackets has grown, an increasing number of well-known clothing manufacturers have been taking advantage of this trend and producing their own versions of these jackets.
Let’s take a look at some of the most prestigious and best-known brands making the most of the shackets trend right now.
Inspired by beach culture, Faherty Brand was launched by twins Alex and Mike Faherty, the latter of whom worked at Ralph Lauren for seven years. His brother Alex is an investment banking graduate who has private equity experience after working at Cerberus.
When the company was first founded, the brothers aimed to produce board shorts that were shorter than the competitions’ and were free from off-putting colors and patterns. It later branched out into a wider range of garments including shackets.
Faherty does a great job with shirt jackets for men and women. Their flagship product and number one bestseller is their Legend Sweater Shirt, which they call “the softest, stretchiest damn shirt in the whole world.”
Faherty describes their Legend Shirt Jacket as:
It’s the bestselling, best-reviewed, closest-to-perfect thing we’ve ever made. Our Legend Collection all started with the development of a proprietary brushed knit fabric that is one of the softest damn things you’ll ever feel and has four-way stretch to move with you, whatever comes your way. The sweater shirt came first (it’s the one you’ll keep coming back to), but there’s so much more to this legendary lineup.Faherty Legend Shirt Jackets
For men, Faherty also offers sherpa-lined shirt jackets, stretch terry shirt jackets, and an epic quilted fleece CPO constructed from three layers of fabric for “a hybrid shirt jacket-style that is more polished than a sweatshirt and endlessly versatile.”
For women, Faherty has offered items like a Fieldstorm Blanket Shirt Jacket and a shacket-like Sherpa Jacket in addition to its lineup of Legend Shirt Jackets.
The clothing and lifestyle brand launched its first full clothing brand back in 2013. It currently has more than 30 stores across the USA.
Founded by world champion surfer Kelly Slater and creative director John Moore, Outerknown is a brand with a heavy emphasis on environmental sustainability. It claims to produce all its clothing using long-lasting resources of high quality.
The company aims to provide it can make quality clothing whilst adopting fair labor practices. Outerknown was first founded back in 2015 in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
It specializes in producing garments such as jeans, tees, shirts, sweaters, outerwear, pants, tanks, tops, dresses and jumpsuits.
Heritage brand Woolrich, which dates back to 1830, boasts an excellent lineup of shirt jackets for women and men (which they call overshirts).
For women, look for cotton twill and wool check overshirts and oversized boyfriend shirt jackets that are made in the USA. Woorlich offers a number of shackets for men like a quilted Alaskan Check Overshirt in Recycled Wool and western-front flannel plaid shirt jackets.
Vuori’s Range Shirt Jackets for men feature a fleece layer and cotton outside and comes in a good-looking range of muted plaids. Women can choose from overshirt options like a Sycamore Shirt Jacket and Cozy Sherpa jacket.
Urban Outfitters first started life back in the early 1970s out ofWest Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is now a towering lifestyle retail corporation with a large presence across Europe and the UAE as well as the United States.
Primarily aimed at young consumers, Urban Outfitters offers a wide range of clothing, beauty products, accessories, footwear and vinyl records and is a superb alternative to SHEIN for cheap, trendy fashion. As of 2020, it had 248 locations across the world.
UO tends to carry a varied selection of shirt jackets, shackets, overshirts and chore jackets for men and women alike.
Men can try Urban Outfitters for shirt jacket offerings like a colorblock cord overshirt, double cloth check overshirt, a quilted shirt jacket from Alpha Industries, a bright OBEY Bryson Shirt Jacket, and a Vintage LL Bean Snap UP Shirt Jacket.
For women, look for items like a Corduroy Shirt Jacket and Twill “Boyfriend Shirt Jacket” by their house brand BDG, a printed Chore Jacket from Vans, a UO Hunting Coat and a Vintage Overdyed French Work Jacket.
Online retailer Huckberry was founded by Adam Forch and Richard Greiner in 2010 and is one of my absolute favorite menswear retailers on the planet. The pair launched the company with just $10k each from their personal savings. The Austin, Texas-based online retailer specializes in showcasing products from various top brands under one roof.
Huckberry carries a nice assortment of stylish shirt jackets for men (but sadly does not stock clothing for women).
Look to Huckberry for a ranger expedition shirt jacket and quilted waxed shirt jacket from its house brands Flint and Tinder and Proof as well as a range of offerings from elevated menswear brands like Ottway, Schott, Taylor Stitch, Topo Designs, Universal Works, Faherty Brand, Marine Layer, and Billy Reid.
Online personal styling service Stitch Fix is another potential destination for shackets. The fashion startup has written about the shacket trend in the past (see: “men’s shackets trend spotlight“). When I reviewed Stitch Fix, my stylist found me a shacket from their house brand Eventide. Stitch Fix also carries several brands on this list, like Faherty, who specialize in shirt jackets.
Toad&Co has a ton of stylish shackets for men and women.
The brand first started life in a Colorado garage back in 1991 when it was founded by Jessica Nordhaus, who started producing torque hats for her friends.
The company aims to support local communities and carry out its work in the most sustainable manner possible. It gives a percentage of the money that it makes from sales back to the environment, and is partnered with the nonprofit organization 1% for the Planet.
For men, there are “shirtjacs” (their term) made out of a recycled brushed wool blend, others made out of 100% organic cotton flannel, and even a hooded shirt jacket.
Toad&Co makes a stellar lineup of shirt jackets for women as well, in materials like eco-friendly wide-wale corduroy and a cool denim-jacket alternative made from 100% organic cotton.
Toad&Co specializes in other garments including shirts, pants, t-shirts and sweaters. It has hemp, organic cotton and vegan-based collections alongside a recycled range of clothing.
Since its launch, one of Everlane’s main aims has been to offer “radical transparency” into its pricing policies as a way to diversify from its competitors.
While Everlane launched as an online-only brand, it has joined other direct-to-consumer brands like Allbirds in embracing omnichannel retail. Everlane is in the process of transitioning into an omnichannel retailer, opening a series of Brick-and-Mortar 2.0 stores in Boston, Palo Alto, Los Angeles, Washington, DC and New York City.
Everlane offers a solid range of options for women, including oversized shirt jackets, chore jackets, and organic cotton quilted shirt jackets.
For men, Everlane offers options like a ReNew fleece-lined heavyweight overshirt and a flannel chore jacket.
Todd Snyder, founded by the designer of the same name back in 2011, as an excellent source of shirt jackets for men.
The brand takes inspiration from Savile Row, military tailoring and New York Style, and is one of my absolute favorite elevated menswear brands around.
Todd Synder clothing first appeared at Barneys New York and several Nordstrom stores back in 2021. In 2015, the clothing brand was acquired by American Eagle for $11 million. A collaboration with restaurateur Lincoln Pilcher was unveiled in 2019.
The brand has won a considerable number of awards and honors over the years and was named as a Best New Menswear designer in 2013 by GQ. I love wandering around Todd Snyder’s flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York.
Todd Snyder also offers models like Italian suede shirt jackets with elbow patches in check and houndstooth patterns, Portuguese sherpa lined flannel basecamp shirts, Italian corduroy overshirts and a variety of quilted shirt jackets.
The brand was first founded as an online retailer by Andy Dunn and Brian Spaly back in 2007. In 2012, the brand branched out into physical retail by opening a number of Guideshop locations.
It also launched a partnership with Nordstrom in the early 2010s. The company was purchased by Walmart in 2017 for $310 million. It now has over 60 locations.
(Look inside this Bonobos Guideshop in Washington, DC to learn more about their omnichannel retail experience.)
They have offered an oversized shacket with sherpa lining, one made from brushed cotton, and a “cozy shacket” that really stretches the term, kitted out with a shawl collar, patch pockets and a wool-viscose-polyester blend.
L.L. Bean, first founded in 1912 by Leon Leonwood Bean in Freeport, Maine, carriers a dizzying variety of items that can be categorized as shirt jackets.
L.L. Bean’s shackets for women include a cozy chamois, sherpa-lined zip-up shirt in buffalo plaid, and a relaxed-chic corduroy collared, fleece-lined shirt jacket with patch pockets.
For men, their shirt jackets include a lined canvas shacket from their 1912 heritage brand and a sweater-fleece Shirt Jac.
The company has 54 stores worldwide. Its flagship store is still located on Main Street in Freeport, Maine.
Founded in 2007 by Jamie Rupp, Ohio-based Relwen has nailed what Huckberry calls the “Americana-meets-vintage military aesthetic.” Rupp observes that the goal of Relwen is “to make hard-working products that are rugged, lasting, and durable in both materials and design.”
Relwen produces a collection of sturdy and cozy shirt jackets, sweater blazers and CPOs for men.
Lands’ End was founded in Chicago by Gary Comer in 1963. The Wisconsin brand focusses on casual attire, including shirt jackets, as well as luggage and home furnishings.
The company was a subsidiary of Sears Holdings between 2002 and 2014. It became a publicly traded company in 1986. It was one of the first companies to offer an online live chat facility to its customers in the 1990s.
Their selections for men include a flannel lined work shirt jacket, a waffle-lined flannel shacket, and an insulated Primaloft Eco-quilted shacket.
Lands End also makes a great deal of cozy shirt jackets for women, including an oversized sweater fleece shacket, a chino herringbone shirt jacket, and a sport knit overshirt.
Although the company does most of its business online, it has a number of retail stores, many of which are located in the Upper Midwest.
Untuckit, first founded in 2011 by Aaron Sanandres and Chris Riccobono to appeal to men, has expanded its lineup to women and is an interesting destination for shackets and overshirts.
The company takes its name from the way its shirts are not designed to be tucked into pants. The brand name is sometimes stylized as “UNTUCKit.”
As a result, many of the shirts that its sells are cut slightly shorter than most men’s dress shirts. It opened its first physical store in 2015 and now has over 70 stores. The flagship store can be found on New York’s Fifth Avenue, and the company also has physical stores in the UK.
Untuckit has produced a cropped cord utility jacket with patch pockets that certainly looks like a shacket, and fully-lined shirt jackets for men.
Untuckit’s shirt jacket offerings for women are more hit and miss, but has included “the Chloe,” which is a long double-breasted blazer in a firey red and black plaid.
Their catalog also offers button-down shirts, polos, t-shirts, vests, sweatshirts, outerwear, and sports coats.
Legendary Whitetails is a clothing brand that supplies apparel and gifts specifically targeted at deer hunters, though their apparel is just as appropriate for everyday chores. The direct-to-consumer company was first launched by Larry Huffman in 1999.
Headquartered in Apopka, Florida, he company catalogue consists of lines for men, women and kids, Big and Tall sizing, homeware, footwear, hunting products and items for automobiles.
Legendary Whitetails has a wide selection of shackets for men, including hooded shirt jackets. Its women’s line is one of the fastest-growing parts of the Legendary Whitetails catalogue, and includes a stellar selection of cute and cozy shirt jackets for under $100.
Perhaps best known for warm and cozy blankets, Pendleton is a good option for wool-blend shirt jackets for men and women. For women, look for fuzzy berber fleece shirt jackets and twill jackets, or find a “doublesoft” sherpa-lined shirt jacket and fitted overshirts for men.
The roots of Pendleton can be traced back to 1864 when company founder Thomas Lister Kay started working in the woolen mills of Oregon. He subsequently opened his very own woolen mill in Salem. The company continues to weave woolens in its two Pacific Northwest mills to this day. Pendleton specializes in warm plaid and southwest-inspired patterns.
Where to Buy Vintage Shirt Jackets (Shackets) for Women and Men
Online vintage clothing stores are great sources for shackets for men and women.
Scouring clothing e-commerce platforms can turn up affordable, stylish vintage shirt jackets from the likes of Woolrich, Dickies, Wrangler, Pendleton, Patagonia, LL Bean, J. Crew’s Wallace and Barnes label, Carhartt, Polo Ralph Lauren, Orvis, and Billy Reid.
For a great selection of vintage shirt jackets, shackets, chore jackets and overshirts, try:
My Favorite Shacket
But my absolute favorite shirt jacket is vintage.
A long, long time ago, my grandfather gave me his oversized red-and-gray plaid shirt jacket from JC Penny’s house brand St. John’s Bay to keep warm one day and let me keep it.
I have had it in my closet ever since.
It has traveled around with me from my childhood home to my apartment and now to my house.
It’s quilted and cozy and boxy, and it’s more oversized on me than it was on my grandfather. It’s not the most stylish shirt jacket I own, but I love putting it on.
